The Old Fashioned is a cocktail enjoyed by many and it’s the perfect way to dress up your favourite bourbon, without detracting from the taste. The bitterness, mixed with the sweetness of the sugar cube and fruity aromas blend well and enhance the whiskey’s flavour profile nicely. We used American Eagle 4 Year Old Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey in our Old Fashioned, which has been aged in American oak barrels. The flavours of this Tennessee Bourbon are vanilla and fudge with bitter-sweet orange and they work extremely well for this cocktail.
The Old Fashioned has a difficulty rating of 3/10, due to the simple process and recipe.
Many people have claimed to invent this drink, appearing in the 1800s with the use of bourbon being introduced after the prohibition in the 1930s. This cocktail has had a few different ingredient versions under the same name over time. This may have enraged the purists, however, there is only one true and iconic Old Fashioned.
We served the Old Fashioned in the traditional way – in a rocks glass over ice. The drink fully displays the beautiful colours of the bourbon and is topped with an orange zest to bring another aromatic dimension. Traditionally this is served with a maraschino cherry, but we used a normal cherry, of which the rich burgundy colour heightened the sophistication of the Old Fashioned.
